The Amendments of the Constitution Should Matter
I think we all should think that the Amendments of the Constitution Should Matter. That they define a large part of the rights and responsibilities of the subjects and nation we all live in. I worry that is not the case.
Why?
They're looking at three terms. And the option mentioned in news reports is literally Putin's playbook.
That's what we're dealing with.
We are looking at a body of people fighting for a third term. And I can't believe it.
This administration doesn't care one bit about the constitution. Let's review the 22nd amendment.
"No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President"
It's pretty cut and dry. Now I don't always think the originalism of the supreme court has got it right. But most of the time those my hesitance and disagreements are about differences of recognizing historical precedent and analogues. That was always my disagreement with Dobbs. It's why I struggle to reconcile it with Bruen. But I digress.
My entire life the conservatives in my life has been all about the constitution. That was the thing. Patriotism and holding to the constitution.
Now we have someone shredding it. And people are standing by.
We have a president who is attempting to unilaterally sidestep the 14th amendment.
But I'm not supposed to freak out. I'm not supposed to freak out about a third term. I'm not supposed to freak out when there is administration officials arguing that due process is not for criminals (especially not citizens); in violation of the rights provided to all PERSONS in the fifth amendment.
When am I allowed to freak out?
I mean this sincerely. We're sending people El Salvador to be in a prison known for it's civil rights violations with no end date. These people weren't vetted or given due process. And they aren't in their country of origin. How is that what we stand for?
Some of these people were lawful asylum seekers. We're detaining and deporting people here on legal status for speech we don't like. Once again all of this seems to be in violation of the first amendment guaranteed to all PEOPLE not citizen.
We're about to watch the revocation of temporary protected status for more people. Advocating for denaturalizing some criminals.
It worries me. Especially when we seem to have the world's richest man directly intervening in elections and sowing discord against the courts.
The Constitution is our government. Everything else is a temporary stakeholder and steward. It doesn't seem like the current administration agrees with that.
Let's remember that at every special election between now and midterms.
